4. Not Part Of The Plan
Unfortunately, Max had slipped on a sloped path near our room and did serious damage to her lower leg. She broke the tibia bone and scraped all skin off the ankle bone and damaged ligaments.
The hotel called an ambulance and I insisted they take her to the best hospital on the island which happened to be The Bangkok Hospital.
Staff there were brilliant and got her comfortable within no time.
We took out insurance which of course would cover this situation however being a Friday afternoon in Australia, I found it just about impossible to get in touch with someone. Once I did talk to someone, they said they'd get back to me soon. The hospital had booked an operating theatre and was insisting Max needed surgery that day.
We did not hear back from the insurance so we gave the go-ahead to the hospital having to pay for the operation ourselves. The insurance company did pay up eventually however bear in mind, there is a chance that even though insurance is taken out, you might need access to funds to get the emergency treatment done and then claim it later.
The operation was a success and after a week in the hospital, Max was discharged and we moved our stuff into a hotel close to the hospital as she had to have regular outpatient treatments and start the rehabilitation. This rehab was to continue until the 19th November.
We had to get our visas extended twice as the automatic visa only allows for a 30 day stay. This can be a nerve-racking process if you get the wrong person at the visa office. They made an error on our second extension date which, when pointed out, they insisted all be ok at the airport when we leave.
We were pulled up at the airport with this error and fined for not having the correct departure date. They would only accept cash... go figure. 😏
