50. Cricklade, Bath and Cirencester - UK
Cricklade
Here are some pics of this little village.
There are at least 3 local pubs.
The buildings and gardens are so easy on the eye
St Mary's Church
St Sampson's Church
This buttress was added later as the tower started leaning soon after it was built.
Beautiful Stained Glass
Inside the tower
Only in the UK can you find a jigsaw puzzle with a picture of a vegetable.
Great name for a bicycle repairer!
I did say it was a quiet village! The second pic is a close-up.
Near the source of the River Thames
Summer has come early!
Bath
The trip to Bath started with a bus ride to Swindon train station.
This sign was just above our heads. Hope we don't need it...
We caught the train to Bath and were surprised at how big the city was. It's nice enough but seemed to lack the soul a lot of other places had. It was wall-to-wall retail with all the usual brand names. The main attraction, the Roman Baths was on our list to visit. When we got there we found out it was AUD 100 for both of us to go in. We passed on it for the reason that, if we were say on a 6-week holiday, you don't mind parting with that kind of money to get wet in a pool with a hundred other tourists. But being on an extended 'adventure' of nearly 10 months to date, we chose to be more discerning with where our money was spent. We wandered around and were glad we didn't book a place for a week or so. I realised when we got back, I had only taken one pic. So here it is.
Cirencester
Another day trip was to Cirencester (pronounced Siren - sester). A cute place that happened to have a small local produce market in the village square on the day we visited.
Fruit loaf looked good.
We found out there was an old Roman amphitheatre not far from the square. We decided it could be worth seeing and made our way on foot. When we got there, I had to check my map again as I, and am sure a lot of other people, have a picture in their head of what an amphitheatre should look like. Perhaps something like this one in Turkey...
Nah. We found this... A freshly mown hole that would have passed off better as a man-made crop circle.
I then consulted my Turkish friend...
Did you get to Wells, just south of Bath...been there a few times, very medieval
ReplyDeleteNext time mate when we have a car.
