72. High Halden, Kent - House and Pet Sitting - Episode 14

One of the best moments on this trip is when you approach a property on the pet sit and not really knowing much about the property itself and then, getting a pleasant surprise. Having Penny makes travel so much easier. In fact we couldn't get sits like this without a car as this property is not on a bus route. The house was built in the 16th century and sits on 20 acres of pasture. It was a bit dark inside but it gave the place its unique character as we made our way through the house through the hallways and rooms a plenty. It did take a full day to get our bearings!

The owner was very welcoming and since we came late in the day, she made us dinner before she went to bed as  she was leaving on a very early morning flight.

The dogs were well behaved and easy to be with. We had to be careful with Timmy as he was recovering from a leg operation and had to make sure he didn't over exert himself.

There are plenty of exposed original timbers around the house. It has been renovated in sections and the upstairs section now has 5 bedrooms all with ensuites.

We were about 5 miles from Tenterden where got our supplies. These country towns are so individual and I think this is the case because small businesses seem to be able to sustain themselves rather than in many countries where they struggle or close only to have franchised businesses take their place. The churches never fail to impress.

The traditional organ was recently refurbished.


These pics of businesses were taken in Faversham, a village about a 30 minute drive from Tenterden. Good to see bookshops still viable .









Not to mention cobblestone streets a plenty


From here we drive 130km north to one of two sits in Stratford upon Avon - Shakespeare country. The first one is short two day stint and the other is about a week before heading back to the south which we have sits to take us right through to the new year.

We arrived in Cazaugitat (pronounced car-zor-gee-tat) in the mid-afternoon and were greeted by Sue and Richard, an English couple who settled in France 12 years ago. We also met Spangle, Hector and the chooks. The house was built in the 1750s, and many of the old features are still functional. 114. St Peter - Jersey - House and Pet Sitting - Episode 37

Jersey is a self-governing democracy with its own independent financial and legal jurisdictions. It's only 45 sq miles making it about a third the size of Malta. The trip was a 4-and-a-half-hour slightly bumpy ferry ride from Poole but all went well.  Cruising past the island of Guernsey on our way to Jersey Jersey is very much like the UK was 50 years ago. It's quieter, more laid back and, there are few modern buildings to spoil the architecture of the past. 'Vincent' is a bearded collie who resides is in a cottage in the village of St Peter. We were greeted by the owners, a lovely retired couple. They took us out for dinner and the next day, we drove them all the way to the airport. (5 minutes) My generosity knows no bounds! 123. Malta and Gozo

After 2 and a bit hours we arrived in Malta from Madrid and were greeted by Daniel, Ellen and her sister Meredith. Flights are so cheap and it's great to not feel any jet lag! I was born in Malta and always feel a sense of homecoming every time I come back here as I have cousins here, which I'm looking forward to visiting. The previous time was 5 years ago.  We arrived at our 3-bedroom harbour-side apartment in Sliema and were pleasantly surprised at the size. I paced out approx 9 x 47 metres!  Where's Max? Standing in the doorway of the bedroom! It was nice to be in a milder climate as we've experienced a very long cold spell this winter.
