93. Skenfrith and Surrounding Areas - Wales

The Welsh countryside is so beautiful.

The rain has been falling, but we've had many opportunities to get out and about.

The hamlet of Skenfrith.

The bridge at the entrance to Skenfrith.

I have been playing with new photo software so bear with my amateurish artistic flair.

We've been spoilt with two castle ruins six miles apart.
.

Taking Pippin for a walk down the road from our stay.

Next door's ex-vicarage.

The Skenfrith Castle is 100 metres from our accommodation.

Amazing how thick these walls are.

The nearby church.

A building with what's left of a water wheel used in an old granary. The river is only 20 metres away.

We were given this map by the owners.
One can have custom-made maps done, apparently. Complete with spelling errors.

The White Castle - 6 Miles from the house.
One of the few castles that still have a moat.

The stones on the courtyard grounds are remnants of the foundations of a bakery, ironmongery, fresh food stall etc.

One of the passageways.

One of the neighbour's houses.

A gatehouse to what would have to be a mansion.

The local church with an ominous sky.

The tower side of the church shows the huge buttress. A lot of tall stone buildings had buttresses built years after the main building as the ground softened and sections started leaning.

A stunning mansion by the river.

We met a couple and a doggy whilst staying in Skenfrith. Simon, Anna and Molly live across the road from where we stayed. They invited us over for an excellent lunch and we had a great time with them. Sweet people.

In one of our many conversations over lunch, we learned a Doctor Who episode was filmed in Skenfrith. I found the episode and had to take pics of some of the locations.

Having departed Skenfrith today we drove two hours north to Shrewsbury where we'll be spending two nights at an Air B&B before driving 30 minutes up the road for a sit in Market Drayton. Apart from 2 dogs, it seems we have some alpacas to look after and are looking forward to that!
