101. Knocknamota - Ireland - House and Pet Sitting - Episode 27

 A 1-hour drive north got us to our next sit in an area called 'Knocknamota' which is in the county of Wexford in eastern Ireland. The area is beautiful and the property we are staying at is a rural small acreage with a 5-bedroom house. Niamh, (believe it or not, it's pronounced 'Neeve') Paul, and their two young ones greeted us and made us feel at home in an instant. The pets, Sammy and Chickpea have wonderful gentle characters and took to us immediately. After a quick familiarisation with the property, they headed off to catch a plane to Spain - the people, not the pets.

The house

It was a bonus to meet like-minded souls on many levels. When they returned from their holiday, we could have stayed there for a week chatting about the importance of growing organic food, simpler sustainable lifestyles and natural healing. And they were just a few topics we covered. 

Being impartial to cats in general, Chickpea has been my favourite to date.


The garden beds and a greenhouse in the front yard were a little overgrown as this young family home-school their two children and were hindered by a wet winter and spring. Having warm dry weather while we were there allowed me to get my hands dirty and get the beds and greenhouse ready for a summer planting.

The town of Gorey is fairly typical of towns in the southeast of Ireland. It had the basics and not much more. The locals I spoke to said we would really enjoy the southwest so we're looking forward to heading that way. 

 European elections are coming up in early June and how times have changed (for the better). Thirty-four years ago, when I was in Ireland, Sinn Fein was referred to as the political arm of the IRA and at that time, the situation was literally explosive On one occasion I was searched at gunpoint by British soldiers.


Time to move on as we have sits taking us through to the 24th of June, bar 4 days. We are taking advantage of those 4 days by booking an Airbnb on the West Coast. But for now, we are making our way west starting with a 2-day sit in a town near Cork. By the way, the above is the Irish spelling of the name "O'Sullivan".

    How wonderful it is to meet like-minded souls! They would have loved you preparing their garden. Chickpea - what a great name!! My forebears were the O’Sullivan-Beare’s, and their castle (in ruins) is in Bantry Bay in County Cork. It’s called Dunboy Castle.
    Must have been lovely to be on that beach, and have such great weather. Safe travels onward. Hugs!x

We arrived in Cazaugitat (pronounced car-zor-gee-tat) in the mid-afternoon and were greeted by Sue and Richard, an English couple who settled in France 12 years ago. We also met Spangle, Hector and the chooks. The house was built in the 1750s, and many of the old features are still functional. 114. St Peter - Jersey - House and Pet Sitting - Episode 37

Jersey is a self-governing democracy with its own independent financial and legal jurisdictions. It's only 45 sq miles making it about a third the size of Malta. The trip was a 4-and-a-half-hour slightly bumpy ferry ride from Poole but all went well.  Cruising past the island of Guernsey on our way to Jersey Jersey is very much like the UK was 50 years ago. It's quieter, more laid back and, there are few modern buildings to spoil the architecture of the past. 'Vincent' is a bearded collie who resides is in a cottage in the village of St Peter. We were greeted by the owners, a lovely retired couple. They took us out for dinner and the next day, we drove them all the way to the airport. (5 minutes) My generosity knows no bounds! 123. Malta and Gozo

After 2 and a bit hours we arrived in Malta from Madrid and were greeted by Daniel, Ellen and her sister Meredith. Flights are so cheap and it's great to not feel any jet lag! I was born in Malta and always feel a sense of homecoming every time I come back here as I have cousins here, which I'm looking forward to visiting. The previous time was 5 years ago.  We arrived at our 3-bedroom harbour-side apartment in Sliema and were pleasantly surprised at the size. I paced out approx 9 x 47 metres!  Where's Max? Standing in the doorway of the bedroom! It was nice to be in a milder climate as we've experienced a very long cold spell this winter.
