113. Sevenoaks - Kent - UK

After several sits in a row, we are having a break as we head to Daniel and Ellen's place in Sevenoaks to look after it while they're away in Australia for 3 weeks. The unit is in a great location and only a 15-20 minute walk into the town centre. It's been a relief not to search for car parks whenever we want to visit a village or town centre.

We decided to get a bit of 'culture' whilst here with a visit to Knole House. The building was originally built around 600 years ago as a residence for the archbishop at the time. It was then used by Henry VIII and finally passing into the hands of the Sackville family and has been lived in by the family since the early 1600's.

The property is also home to free-roaming deer. They're friendly enough to get close for a pic or two.


I was lucky enough to get eye contact with this beauty.


We also took a trip to Margate, mainly to see the 'Shell Grotto'. The town is on the east coast and quite forgettable but the cave intrigued me. Even the locals have no idea who constructed it or why.
The grotto contains over 4.6 million shells (Who counted them I wonder?) and is quite fascinating.  There is a photo of a seance being conducted down there, which is creepy. But at night, with no sound or external light, it's probably a great place for spooky things. 




We were fortunate to be in town when a David Bowie tribute band was performing in the local theatre.

A night out? Woohoo! Could we stay up that late? Who knows?  We haven't done that for years!

 As a long-term Bowie fan, I thought this guy had big shoes to fill and fill them, he did. I was very impressed with Charlie the singer. His renditions and mannerisms were spot on and the backing band were very good as well. 



And so ends our two weeks in Sevenoaks. Our next sit is in St Peter on the island of Jersey, just off the coast of France, with a bearded collie. That should be fun!

    wow Paul and maxine, that is quite a place the shells etc, and yes who counted them? David Bowie Tribute band, ironic, I was listening to Bowie music throughout the morning,.... Minty liked 'Heros', you know he passed Paul on Wednesday 11th September, its a sad time for us, beloved dog. xoxo

We arrived in Cazaugitat (pronounced car-zor-gee-tat) in the mid-afternoon and were greeted by Sue and Richard, an English couple who settled in France 12 years ago. 114. St Peter - Jersey - House and Pet Sitting - Episode 37

Jersey is a self-governing democracy with its own independent financial and legal jurisdictions. It's only 45 sq miles making it about a third the size of Malta. The trip was a 4-and-a-half-hour slightly bumpy ferry ride from Poole but all went well.  Cruising past the island of Guernsey on our way to Jersey Jersey is very much like the UK was 50 years ago. It's quieter, more laid back and, there are few modern buildings to spoil the architecture of the past. 'Vincent' is a bearded collie who resides is in a cottage in the village of St Peter. We were greeted by the owners, a lovely retired couple. They took us out for dinner and the next day, we drove them all the way to the airport. (5 minutes) My generosity knows no bounds! 123. Malta and Gozo

After 2 and a bit hours we arrived in Malta from Madrid and were greeted by Daniel, Ellen and her sister Meredith. Flights are so cheap and it's great to not feel any jet lag! I was born in Malta and always feel a sense of homecoming every time I come back here as I have cousins here, which I'm looking forward to visiting. The previous time was 5 years ago.  We arrived at our 3-bedroom harbour-side apartment in Sliema and were pleasantly surprised at the size. I paced out approx 9 x 47 metres!  Where's Max? Standing in the doorway of the bedroom! It was nice to be in a milder climate as we've experienced a very long cold spell this winter.
