129. Les Contamines - French Alps - France - House and Pet Sitting - Episode 43

We could see the Alps in the distance as we started the journey. As we approached and passed by the mountains, I was concerned we would be driving up and down hills with precarious bends; however, what we encountered were double lane highways over bridges and tunnels through the mountains, giving us a scenic and relatively flat journey all the way to our destination.

Last Italian hot chocolate plus a filled croissant before crossing the Italian/French border.

If only we had the room in our cases...

The Mont Blanc tunnel is just over 11 kilometres long. It lightened our wallet by 55 euros for the privilege!

We were stunned by the beauty. Here is the view from the kitchen window of our pet sit.

And here are the cheeky dogs appropriately named Mischief and Rascal


A few hundred metres from the house was a 'Gondola' station (enclosed chair lift) which took us up to one of the ski slopes in the area. Sightseeing rather than participation was the choice for both of us!

There was even a section where kids could learn how to ski. The tunnel had a slow-moving conveyor belt that took the kids to the mini slope to practice their balance and direction control.

As one can imagine, the 7 days passed quickly. Walking outside every morning and seeing the snow-capped mountain range was awe-inspiring and humbling at the same time. All the streams we encountered had the cleanest of water that looked like liquid emerald flowing over the well worn rounded stones shaped over millennia. Having clear weather for 6 of the 7 days was also a bonus, as we were told it was rare at that time of the year.

From here we go to Annecy, a beautiful old city just near the Swiss border.

We arrived in Cazaugitat (pronounced car-zor-gee-tat) in the mid-afternoon and were greeted by Sue and Richard, an English couple who settled in France 12 years ago. We also met Spangle, Hector and the chooks. The house was built in the 1750s, and many of the old features are still functional. 114. St Peter - Jersey - House and Pet Sitting - Episode 37

Jersey is a self-governing democracy with its own independent financial and legal jurisdictions. It's only 45 sq miles making it about a third the size of Malta. The trip was a 4-and-a-half-hour slightly bumpy ferry ride from Poole but all went well.  Cruising past the island of Guernsey on our way to Jersey Jersey is very much like the UK was 50 years ago. It's quieter, more laid back and, there are few modern buildings to spoil the architecture of the past. 'Vincent' is a bearded collie who resides is in a cottage in the village of St Peter. We were greeted by the owners, a lovely retired couple. They took us out for dinner and the next day, we drove them all the way to the airport. (5 minutes) My generosity knows no bounds! 123. Malta and Gozo

After 2 and a bit hours we arrived in Malta from Madrid and were greeted by Daniel, Ellen and her sister Meredith. Flights are so cheap and it's great to not feel any jet lag! I was born in Malta and always feel a sense of homecoming every time I come back here as I have cousins here, which I'm looking forward to visiting. The previous time was 5 years ago.  We arrived at our 3-bedroom harbour-side apartment in Sliema and were pleasantly surprised at the size. I paced out approx 9 x 47 metres!  Where's Max? Standing in the doorway of the bedroom! It was nice to be in a milder climate as we've experienced a very long cold spell this winter.
